Last month, we posted about the young boy who was hit by a car in the parking lot of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport. The boy was crossing the street on his way to welcome his father home, who had been serving in Iraq. As he crossed the street, the young boy was run over by a speeding car.
Investigations were pending, as were the results of a toxicology report, in order to determine the cause of the reckless driving. When the accident was first reported, details regarding the state of the driver were sparse. It is now known that the driver has officially been charged with drunk driving.
The driver was lost when he ended up at the airport. He says he was following the directions given by his global positioning device. Even though he knew the directions were wrong and he should not have been at the airport, he followed the GPS anyway.
He was driving too fast, as well. The driver admitted that he saw the boy's family in the street but he still did not slow down or try to avoid an accident. According to police reports, the man admitted that he had consumed four glasses of wine in less than two hours. A blood test done nearly two hours later showed his blood-alcohol level was .07 percent. Police say that the timeline suggests that his blood-alcohol level was likely much higher at the time of the accident.
The driver has been charged with third-degree DWI and criminal vehicular operation. This is his second drunk driving offense.
The boy was seriously injured as a result of the man's negligent driving. He suffered a number of broken bones. The recovery he will go through may be very difficult for him and his family. Hopefully, none of his injuries are permanent but the amount of money the family may have to spend on surgical procedures could be very high. In similar cases, a drunk driver can be held liable for the accident and the victim may receive financial compensation for any pain and suffering experienced.
